Salmonella in cattle

Salmonella is an infectious gastrointestinal tract disease caused by the Salmonella bacteria. Salmonella is a zoonotic disease, which means it can transmit from animals to humans.

Salmonella in cows

Salmonella in cows arises on about 10% of dairy farms in the Netherlands. A Salmonella outbreak on a farm with 100 cows can lead to an average economic cost of $ 4,637. If you do not act immediately, costs can rise to $ 10,000 (Source – GD, the Dutch Animal Health Service).

Types of Salmonella bacteria

There are more than 2,500 different Salmonella bacteria, of which Salmonella Dublin and Salmonella Typhimurium pose the greatest threat regarding Salmonella in cows.

Salmonella infection in cows

Dairy farms can become infected in various ways, e.g. through delivery of infected animals, from infected manure or feed and by infected visitors or pests. Once on a farm, the bacteria spread rapidly. Cows pick up salmonella orally. Then they establish themselves in the gastrointestinal tract and spread via the lymphatic system and blood stream. Salmonella diagnosis is possible with manure or blood testing.

Salmonella symptoms

Salmonella in cows can manifest in high fever with diarrhoea, and result in decreased production. And 80% of farms that experience a case of Salmonella Dublin have to deal with mortalities. In addition, calves can also suffer problems in their joints and pick up lung infections. Some cows pick up the infection but show no symptoms. They are carriers of the disease. That is why Salmonella can survive for years on a farm, and occasionally rear its ugly head.
