Peter van de Beek is the manager of the Poultry Innovation Lab, part of the Poultry Expertise Centre. At the location in Barneveld, there are practical barns for broilers and laying hens, as well as insect facilities where, among others, black soldier flies are bred.
Why HyCare?
“Hygiene and animal health are crucial for us. We receive students, trainees, and visitors in our visible barn every day, and we want to show them how to keep poultry in a responsible way while minimizing the risk of introducing animal diseases. HyCare fits perfectly with that goal.”
The journey to HyCare
“In our broiler barn, we implemented changes such as a coated floor and a color-coded system for clothing and equipment. These adjustments make it easier to truly apply HyCare in practice. The biggest challenge was giving clear instructions and assigning responsibilities to the staff. We’ve made significant progress in that area.”
What does it bring you?
“For students, HyCare creates awareness, why you do things and how to do them properly. It results in a clean, safe working environment. Thanks to the HyCare coach and ongoing monitoring, we get clear insights into where improvements can be made and that helps us grow in a structured way.”

The word ‘biosecurity’ always comes up when we talk about preventing and controlling diseases in poultry farming.
Whenever there’s an outbreak – like avian influenza – biosecurity is one of the first things experts recommend. It plays a key role in stopping the spread of harmful pathogens.
