When digestive problems occur, calves lose both fluids and buffers. This causes a drop in rumen pH, leading to acidosis and dehydration. Acidosis reduces calves' appetite for drinking. Within hours, acidosis can worsen, further decreasing their intake. This results in more fluid and buffer loss, causing increasing weakness.
