A unique story of collaboration, trade and local entrepreneurship: How eartags became the key to open up international trade for African Livestock farmers.
It started with a partnership between Schippers and a local entrepreneur in Tanzania. Together we joined hands with the local government to set-up, a national animal identification program.
With a simple tag ownership is registered and key information about every animal becomes traceable. This proof of ownerships opens the doors for Tanzanian farmers to financing from banks, and gives them access to professional livestock traders.
Animal registration allows government to trace the success of vaccination programs and is essential in efforts to control a disease outbreak.
These simple tags create the foundation to build a professional livestock sector.

A phone call from Tanzania marked the start of a major national animal identification program. The Tanzanian government wanted more insight, control, and access to international markets for livestock farming. Because an ear tag is more than just plastic: it stands for traceability, animal health, ownership, and economic opportunities.
During discussions in Hapert, a sustainable partnership was formed between Ms. Schippers, S&J Animal Tech Limited, and the Tanzanian government. The choice was clear: production of blank ear tags in the Netherlands, with laser engraving and identification in Tanzania itself. This ensures that knowledge, employment, and ownership remain locally anchored.
A factory was set up in Dar es Salaam with 30 laser machines, operated entirely by trained Tanzanians. Every day, thousands of ICAR-certified ear tags are produced here and distributed to farmers through local authorities.
The five-year national livestock program is based on identification and registration that started with 19 million cattle and 17 million sheep and goats. This gives farmers access to financing, insurance, and the global market.
With more than 60 years of experience in animal identification, MS Schippers is proud of this collaboration, which contributes to the sustainable growth of livestock farming in Tanzania, today and in the future.

Every tag is produced according to the highest standard, so that they can resist even the harshest conditions in the field.
In our factory in the Netherlands we produce up to 500 million high quality, ICAR certified, ear tags a year.
