Question 1

What is a cow brush?

Accepted Answer

A cow brush is a tool used in the barn that allows cows to brush themselves. This behavior is natural; in the pasture, cows use trees or posts. In the barn, a cow brush replaces this function. The brush:

• Removes dirt and loose hair
• Reduces itching
• Stimulates blood circulation

This results in cleaner, calmer, and healthier cows.

Question 2

Why do cows use a cow brush?

Accepted Answer

Cows have a strong natural urge to rub and groom themselves. Without a brush, they seek alternatives such as fences or feed bunks. A cow brush:

• Prevents frustration and boredom
• Reduces stress
• Encourages natural behavior Research shows that brushing lowers stress (cortisol levels) and improves overall welfare.

Question 3

What are the benefits of a cow brush for cows?

Accepted Answer

A cow brush provides several direct benefits:

• Less stress and calmer behavior
• Cleaner cows → better barn hygiene
• Fewer skin problems and parasites
• Improved blood flow and metabolism A healthier cow performs better and remains productive for longer.

Question 4

Where and at what height should a cow brush be mounted?

Accepted Answer

What height should a cow brush be mounted?
Install the cow brush at shoulder height (±120–140 cm).

• Ensure the brush can move with the cow
• Account for differences in cow size
• Regularly check the adjustment Incorrect height leads to less frequent use.

Where should you place a cow brush in the barn?

Place the brush in areas frequently visited by the cows:

• Along traffic routes
• Near the feed fence (but not too close to it)
• Near waiting areas Research shows that placement affects usage: brushes closer to feed or water are used more often.

Question 5

Does a cow brush increase milk production?

Accepted Answer

Yes, several studies have shown a positive effect.

• +3.5% milk production for cows with access to a brush
• Up to +1 kg of milk per cow, per day
• Increases of 8–17% observed in some studies This is because stress is reduced, cows are more active, and blood circulation is improved. Note: while the effect varies per farm, the trend is clearly positive.

Question 6

How many cows can use one cow brush?

Accepted Answer

On average, the guideline is:

• 1 cow brush per 50–60 cows In crowded barns or with dominant animals:
• Install extra brushes
• Prevent queues and stress Higher usage leads to a greater overall effect.

Question 7

Which is better: an electric or a static cow brush?

Accepted Answer

There are three types of cow brushes. The best choice depends on your specific situation.

1. Static Cow Brush• No power required: Operates without electricity.
• Highly durable: Very robust and requires minimal maintenance.
• Cost-effective: Lower initial investment.
• Less intensive cleaning: Provides a more superficial grooming experience.

Best choice for: Youngstock or smaller-scale farms.

2. Electric Cow Brush• Automatic rotation: Starts spinning automatically upon contact.
• Intensive cleaning: Provides a deeper clean of the hide.
• Less effort for the cow: The motor does the work, so the cow doesn't have to push as hard.
• Higher daily usage: Can handle more cows per day due to its efficiency.

Best choice for: Standard dairy farming setups.

3. Swinging (Rotating) Cow Brush• Multi-directional movement: Not only rotates but also swings and tilts in multiple directions.
• Full coverage: Easily reaches the head, flanks, and back.
• Highly attractive: Very popular with cows, encouraging frequent use.
• Maximum occupancy: High capacity and high frequency of use.

Best choice for: Large herds where cow comfort and hygiene are top priorities.
