The nipple features a cross-shaped opening; an opening that only opens and provides milk when the calf begins sucking or chewing on the nipple. The nipple will even remain closed when it is moved to the left or right
A teat with a cross-shaped opening should be fitted with the cross in the shape of a '+' and not an 'x'; if the teat is fitted in the form of an 'x', this will lead to a lower milk yield, which in turn will lead to more sucking and chewing. This leads to faster teat wear.
