MS Schippers launches alternative hoof care treatment without disinfectants
Fully automated hoof care without aggressive substances, now possible with MS HoofClean Protect
Dairy farmers can now tackle hoof problems without using disinfectants. MS Schippers introduces MS HoofClean Protect: a pH-neutral cleaning product that, in combination with the nourishing MS HoofClean Care, offers a complete and gentle hoof care treatment. Both products are automatically applied via the existing MS AutoHoofClean system.
Efficient alternative to traditional hoof baths
Hoof problems remain a structural challenge in the dairy sector. Traditional hoof baths require intensive labor and involve the use of aggressive chemicals.
Since 2021, MS Schippers has offered the MS AutoHoofClean: an automated system that treats cows 24/7. Each time a cow walks over the mat, her hooves are automatically cleaned and cared for—without additional labor. With the launch of HoofClean Protect, it is now possible to carry out this process completely without disinfectants, marking an important step toward more sustainable and safer hoof care.
Gentle cleansing, powerful results
“MS HoofClean Protect is a pH-neutral cleanser,” says Inge van der Meulen, R&D specialist at The Schippers Group. “It removes dead skin cells and opens the pores for effective cleaning. In combination with MS HoofClean Care, it results in clean, supple skin that supports hoof recovery. With regular use, the natural function of the skin as a barrier against infection is restored, keeping the hooves in optimal condition.”
Field results confirm effectiveness
The revised protocol was tested for six months on a Dutch dairy farm with 110 cows. The combination of HoofClean Protect and HoofClean Care, applied via the MS AutoHoofClean system, delivered impressive results:
- 90% of severe Mortellaro cases (M4) improved to milder stages (M1) or disappeared completely;
- 50% of all Mortellaro cases were fully resolved within six months.
Benefits for both animals and farmers
The effectiveness and speed of the treatment are comparable to the traditional protocol using disinfectants. The key difference lies in ease of use and animal welfare. MS HoofClean Protect is much milder on the skin and safer to handle than substances like formaldehyde.
